This spiky, upright Chihuahuan desert native occurs in New Mexico, west Texas and into Mexico. The nearly leafless gray-green stems are pencil-like in appearance and have a waxy coating. Small creamy white flowers with red centers are produced in clusters following spring and summer rains. The milky sap may cause skin irritation. Plant in full sun and provide excellent drainage.
