Ebenopsis ebano (Texas Ebony)

Tree

This native of the Rio Grande plains of south Texas forms a large evergreen shrub or small tree that can vary considerably in size. It usually grows as a multi-trunked or low branching form. Its dark, glossy green compound leaves are arranged along thorny branches with a distinctive zig-zag pattern. Creamy yellow, fragrant clusters of flowers are produced from May to October. They are followed by large, decorative woody pods. Plant in full to part sun and well-drained soils.
